Nations Cup: Egypt Book Second Round Place, Ghana On The Brink Of Exit

Egypt played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Cape Verde to qualify for the second round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, while Ghana are on the verge of crashing out.

Both games produced entertainment and late drama as Cape Verde and Egypt finished first and second respectively.

Benchimol Tavares gave Cape Verde the lead on the stroke of half time before Trezeguet restored parity for Egypt after the restart.

Mohamed Abdallah produced a superb finish to put Egypt in the lead in the 93rd minute.

Cape Verde crawled their way back into the game with a 99th minute leveller to snatch a point.

Bryan Teixiera fired in from a tight angle to rescue his country from defeat and book their place in the next round.

Egypt also qualified for the second round with three points despite failing to win any of their three games in the group stage.

The Black Stars of Ghana surrendered a 2-0 lead to play out a disappointing 2-2 draw against Mozambique.

Jordan Ayew gave Ghana the lead in the 15th minute from the spot after John Paintsil was fouled in the 18-yard box.

He scored another penalty in the second half after a Mozambican defender was penalised for handball to make it 2-0.

Geny Catamo also converted a penalty for Mozambique after Andre Ayew handled the ball in the 18-yard box.

Reinildo Mandava brought Mozambique level with a glancing header in the 94th minute to make it 2-2.

Ghana will be hoping results in other groups favour them in a slim chance to make it to the next stage as one of the four best losers in the competition.

Cape Verde finished top of the group with seven points, Egypt came second on three points while Ghana finished third with two points, same with Mozambique but with with a better goal difference.
