Ondo Explosion: Vehicle Transporting Explosives Triggered Detonation -Akeredolu

Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has said that the explosion which rocked the state was caused by a vehicle in a convoy transporting explosives to a storage facility in a neighbouring state.

Akaredolu disclosed this on his twitter @RotimiAkeredolu on Saturday, where he said that he had been briefed by the chief security officer that the vehicle developed fault along the Owo Road about 2km from the state airport.

According to him, “Security personnel and other individuals transporting the ordinances noticed smoke from the vehicle. After several attempts to extinguish the resulting fire failed, the vehicle and its consignment ignited causing a massive explosion that was felt in Akure and its environs.”

He however expressed concerned over remenants of the explosives, saying it was not certain if they were yet to detonate, adding that everything was “under control and I will be updating the public on any new developments.”

The governor said that the state was making efforts to ascertain if there were casualties.

“Following my visit to the scene, I have directed that the area be cordoned off to allow the explosive ordinance department/bomb squad to extricate the vehicle buried underground,” he added.

He urged citizens to keep calm, as the pandemic was already causing tension in the state and country at large.
