One person died on Sunday after a bus rammed into a commercial motorcycle, popularly known as Okada, in Lagos State.

THE WHISTLER gathered that while the deceased who happened to be a passenger died on the spot, the Okada rider sustained serious injury.

The unfortunate accident happened at the Bolade Intersection, inward Oshodi, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Confirming the accident, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary investigations revealed the driver of the commercial Volkswagen bus was on top speed after beating a traffic light, and drove recklessly, which resulted in the accident.

The corpse of the passenger and the rescued Okada rider have since been evacuated by the officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), while the bus driver has been handed over to the Police.

“Preliminary investigations revealed a notorious commercial Volkswagen bus driver who was on a top speed after beating a traffic light drove recklessly and rammed into a moving commercial motorcycle with passenger at Bolade intersection inward Oshodi,” Adebayo said in a statement.

“LASTMA Durojaiye Musefiu ‘Bravo’ (Zone 20 P. W. D) who was on a traffic monitoring patrol with his team around Oshodi axis confirmed that the accident could have been averted if the notorious commercial Volkswagen bus driver had obeyed the traffic light regulating vehicular movements at Bolade Intersection.”

The General Manager of LASTMA, Bakare-Oki Olalekan, who visited the accident scene, warned commercial bus drivers against overspeeding, urging them to always obey traffic rules.

He also appealed to motorcycle operators to stop plying highways and other restricted routes.

Sunday’s incident happened just a little over a week that three persons lost their lives after a truck rammed into a motorcycle plying one-way, long the Lagos- Badagry Expressway.
