Oyegun’s Extension Spells Doom For APC In 2019 – Party Chieftain

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Murtala Nyako, says the party may be a spectator and not a participant in the 2019 election, following the tenure extension of the national working committee (NWC).

Nyako, who is also a former governor of Adamawa state, said this in Yola, Adamawa state capital, during the weekend, while addressing a group of APC supporters in the state.

The APC chieftain described the NWC extension as undemocratic and unconstitutional, saying the party currently lacks due process and risks being defeated in the 2019 election.

The APC at its National Executive Council meeting in February, extended the tenure of the NWC led by John Odigie-Oyegun by 12 months.

Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi state, had said the extension would take effect from June 30.

“Considering the time left for the party to conduct all the congresses and conventions and considering that our leader Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been charged with the responsibility of reconciling all aggrieved members of our party, we cannot afford to approach the general election with more disputes and crises,” Bello said at the end of the APC NEC meeting last month.

Reacting to the extension on Saturday, Nyako said: “Even if a mechanic takes APC to court today over the unconstitutional and undemocratic tenure extension of party officials, it is very clear that the court can lock the national secretariat of the party.

“If there is no convention in APC before the general election, the party may become a spectator instead of a participant.”

The Lagos state chapter of the APC had also rejected the tenure extension, of the Odigie-Oyegun led APC.
