In what seems to be a surprise move by coach Jose Mourinho, Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been included in the team’s 25-man squad for the 2016/17 Premier League season.

The German, who played his final game for his country on Wednesday, signed for United last season but he didn’t have the impact many were hoping for under Louis van Gaal.

Since Mourinho’s appointment, he had made it clear that the German had no future at Old Trafford saying he is surplus to requirement.

“We have a decision completely made about (Paul) Pogba, (Ander) Herrera, (Morgan) Schneiderlin, (Marouane) Fellaini and Michael Carrick (Schweinsteiger’s fellow central midfielders),” he said last Friday.

“We have five players for two positions. It’s very difficult that an opportunity will arrive.”

However, the United boss today (Friday) named Schweinsteiger as one of his 17 non-home based players for the coming season.

“My wish would be to continue playing for Manchester United,” Schweinsteiger said on his future whilst on international duty with Germany

“I had a good conversation with Mourinho and have no problems with him. We must see how it goes.

“One thing is for sure: I’m not going to stop playing football,” he added. “I still believe in my own ability. I could still help Manchester United if given the chance.”

The 32-year-old however said he would consider a future in the MLS.

“The MLS transfer window is closed, so it won’t happen this season. But of course, the US is an option.”
