South African Policeman To Spend 30 Years In Jail For Killing Nigerian

Austin Reynold, a 24-year old South African police constable, who allegedly robbed and murdered a Nigerian, Ebuka Okoli, has been sentenced to 30 years in jail.

The South African court passed the judgment on Monday.

Reynold had been found guilty by the court on charges bordering on murder and robbery. 

He allegedly raided a community in Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal, where the Nigerian was living and shot him to death at close range after  robbing him.

Ronald ran out of favor when another person who was involved in the crime stood as a state witness.

Meanwhile, the trial of eight police officers who allegedly tormented and killed another Nigerian, Ibrahim Olamilekun Badmus, was adjourned till April 13, 2020, by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, South Africa, .

The accused police officers had claimed tha Badmus died from a drug abuse after swallowing many pills during a raid.

Speaking last week, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, through the commission’s public relations official, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, had said justice was the right way to go in dealing with xenophobia.

“We had always stated that there have to be consequences for actions. We are glad that this case finally came to an end and South Africa has demonstrated the political will to deal with xenophobia.”

She had also urged Africans to show brotherly love to one another as they work towards building continent bound by love and progress.
