Transfer Deadline Day: David Luiz, Sissoko, Wilshere In Dramatic Moves To Cap Record-Breaking Window

David Luiz’s return to Chelsea, Jack Wilshere’s loan move to Bournemouth and Tottenham beating Everton in the race to sign Moussa Sissoko were among the most eye-catching deals to go through on transfer deadline day.

Shortly after Wednesday’s 11pm deadline brought the summer window to a close, Chelsea announced they had re-signed Luiz from Paris St Germain on a three-year deal.

The fee paid by Chelsea, two years from them selling the Brazil defender to PSG for £50million, was reported to be at least £32million.

Wednesday also saw the Blues complete a deal understood to be worth £23million for Fiorentina’s former Bolton defender Marcos Alonso.

England midfielder Wilshere made a season-long loan switch from Arsenal to Bournemouth, while the Gunners’ north London rivals Tottenham brought in France midfielder Sissoko from Newcastle on a five-year deal for a reported £30million.

Everton had earlier met the asking price for the player but were unable to seal his signature.

Figures published by Deloitte’s Sports Business Group at the start of the day showed that Premier League clubs’ gross spending in the window stood at £1.005billion, and a reported total of around £170million was added to that by the subsequent dealings.

Manchester City had a high-profile quartet of players leave on season-long loans as goalkeeper Joe Hart, striker Wilfried Bony, playmaker Samir Nasri and defender Eliaquim Mangala joined Torino, Stoke, Sevilla and Valencia respectively.

Spurs’ other deadline-day signings were winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou from Marseille on a permanent deal and goalkeeper Pau Lopez from Espanyol on loan, while someone Everton did manage to land was West Ham striker Enner Valencia, who joined on loan for the season.

Premier League champions Leicester announced they had recruited Algeria striker Islam Slimani from Sporting Lisbon, who said the deal was worth 30million euros (around £25.5million), potentially rising by another 5million euros (£4.2million) – which makes him the Foxes’ record signing.

Sunderland were another club among those to break their transfer record on Wednesday as they splashed out £13.6million for Gabon midfielder Didier Ndong from Lorient, and they also acquired a Manchester City player on a season-long loan as Belgium defender Jason Denayer signed up.

The fee Burnley paid Derby for Republic of Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick was undisclosed, but the Clarets confirmed he was their record signing.

Elsewhere, West Ham picked up former Real Madrid and Liverpool full-back Alvaro Arbeloa on a free transfer.

West Brom also signed a free agent in Wales forward Hal Robson-Kanu as well as defender Allan Nyom from Watford, and Hull brought in midfielder James Weir from Manchester United, striker Dieumerci Mbokani on loan from Dynamo Kiev and AZ Alkmaar midfielder Markus Henriksen on loan.

Middlesbrough announced the signing of Adama Traore from Aston Villa, while fellow winger Albert Adomah went in the opposite direction.

Bony was not the only player heading to Stoke, with the club also announcing loan deals for Porto defender Bruno Martins Indi and Derby goalkeeper Lee Grant. Defender Philipp Wollscheid and striker Joselu both headed out of the door, joining Wolfsburg and Deportivo respectively, both on loan.

Mario Balotelli finally made a permanent exit from Liverpool as the striker signed for Nice, Luis Alberto departed Anfield for Lazio and Andre Wisdom and Lazar Markovic left the Reds for loan spells with Red Bull Salzburg and Sporting Lisbon respectively.

Chelsea loaned Juan Cuadrado back to Juventus for three years, Gokhan Inler left Leicester for Besiktas, and Serge Gnabry departed Arsenal for Werder Bremen.
