Why EFCC Froze Benue Govt Account

The Benue State government’s bank accounts have been frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The move might not be unconnected with plots to further frustrate the state governor, Samuel Ortom, who recently dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Recall that the governor, few days ago, was served with an impeachment notice by no fewer than 8 members of the state assembly.

It was learnt that the anti-graft agency, issued the order late last night, as it is allegedly probing the security vote of the governor.

Chief Press Secretary to Ortom, Terver Akase, who confirmed the development, said it was part of agenda to cripple the state.

“Yes, it is part of the evil agenda to cripple the state. It is only in Benue that the EFCC is probing the security vote of the governor,” he said.

A top official who shed more light on the incident, but pleaded anonymity explained: “The order would affect the payment of salaries and all of the state government’s financial obligations because these are accounts from where salaries and other sundry payments are paid.

“We also gathered that the commission secured a valid court order which was presented to all the affected banks for necessary action but it is clearly a witch-hunt because Governor Ortom defected from the APC, that is Nigerian democracy for you.

“We are only urging Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to use his good offices to stop these spate of impunity from hell going on in our country because we are gradually descending to anarchy in Nigeria.

“When has it become an offence for anyone to defect to another party, for God’s sake? Is this the country and democracy we all gave our all and also lost loved one to achieve?” he queried.

At the time of filing this report, the EFCC is yet to issue a statement on the issue.
