Why We Are Clamping Down On Cyber Criminals In Nigeria– Minister

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has revealed that the ministry is seriously paying attention to making the Nigerian cyber space safe to attract investors.

He said the activities of cyber criminals have necessitated the need for the ministry through the Digital Economy Centre to feed cyber security institutions in the country with information that would facilitate the fight against cyber-crime.

Pantami said this on Wednesday at the ongoing Nigerian International Partnership Forum in Paris, organized by the Federal Government in Paris.

The communication minister spoke on the role of the digital economy centre in supporting cyber security institutions in combating cyber-crime in the country.

He also explained that a new malware is developed every four seconds, making cyberspace threatening.

Pantami said, “I will speak more with regards to cyber-crime in the country and the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to ensure that an enabling environment is being provided for all to invest in the country and also attain a win-win situation between Nigeria on one hand and the potential investors on the other hand.

“As long as you are online, then definitely, you are a potential target of cyber criminals wherever they are. Cyber-crimes and cyber criminals today are more effective in committing their crimes than physical criminals. Why? they don’t need any travelling passport to commit crime. Somebody could sit from one country, from one continent and launch an attack on another continent.

“They don’t need any visa, they are not subjected to any form of immigration. They are not subjected to any background check.

“They only sit down at the comfort of their homes; maybe in the far Eastern part of the world and launch an attack.”

He said his ministry has opened a national center for artificial intelligence and robotics.

The minister added that his ministry is collaborating with security agencies and will deploy robots to fight insecurity.
