The governments of Abia and Imo states have jointly activated a comprehensive security operation aimed at restoring full safety along the busy Aba–Owerri Expressway.
The initiative follows a spike in criminal incidents targeting commuters, particularly as travel intensity rises ahead of the Christmas season.
Following an emergency strategic security meeting held on December 4, at the Imo State Government House, Owerri, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State agreed to establish a unified security structure to curb criminality along the corridor.
The joint team is composed of personnel drawn from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Police, DSS, and other authorized security agencies, marking one of the strongest inter-state security collaborations in the region.
The newly inaugurated joint Taskforce has been mandated to commence full operations beginning December 5, 2025.

Their assignment includes round-the-clock patrols and sustained surveillance not only along the expressway but also across adjoining bushes and vulnerable spots.
To strengthen intelligence gathering, the team will deploy high-grade drones and advanced surveillance tools to monitor, detect, and swiftly respond to suspicious activities.
Governor Otti applauded Governor Uzodimma for the swift apprehension of the criminals responsible for the recent attack on his advance team, describing it as a sign of Imo State’s strengthened security architecture and leadership commitment.
Reassuring residents, travelers, and holiday returnees, both Governors emphasized that the Aba–Owerri route is now under heightened protection.
They cautioned that any individual or group found engaging in acts of criminality will face strict consequences under the law.
