Awoniyi Returns From Injury With Goal Against Arsenal

Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi made a triumphant return from injury to score for Nottingham Forest in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

The former Liverpool striker, who has been out of action since November, came off the bench to score a consolation goal for the hosts at the City Ground Stadium.

He suffered the injury while on international duty for Nigeria in the Super Eagles’ 1-1 home draw against Lesotho in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.

The injury ruled him out of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The first half of the encounter ended goalless as Arsenal failed to take advantage of their dominance.

Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead going into the closing moments of the game.

Awoniyi replaced Chris Wood in the 46th minute and he scored Nottingham Forest’s only goal of the encounter in the 89th minute with a clinical finish in the 18-yard box

The 26-year-old has now scored in his last three matches against the Gunners. He was also on target in the first leg, which Arsenal won 2-1.

He scored the only goal of the encounter last season to help Nottingham Forest avoid relegation after a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Up next for Awoniyi and his Nottingham Forest teammates is a trip to Bournemouth on Sunday.

Arsenal will entertain Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
