The soldiers were rescued at Basira, a border village under Gidan Roumdji district of Niger Republic, on Friday.

One Bello Turji led the bandits to the military base codenamed “Burkusuma Camp” where military and paramilitary officers were killed, reports Premium Times.

The attack took place in the early hours of Friday, but due to the telecommunications shutdown in parts of Sokoto and Katsina, the information only got to the media on Sunday.

“Throughout the attack, the soldiers could not reach out to their colleagues for reinforcement. And even before the attack, if people of the villages around Dama had network, they would have alerted the soldiers because some of them have given out their contacts to the villagers,” Premium Times quoted a source to have said.
