A ministerial nominee and former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola has expressed his resolve to pioneer privileged taxes from those who have huge resources in society.
He stated this today during the senate ministerial screening while answering a question on taxation put before him.
He said “I am going to pioneer privileged taxes from those who have huge resources. I will recommend taxation of wealthy people in Nigeria. I will advocate a just taxation that will bridge the equality of people in society.”
On the issue of salaries owed Osun workers by his administration asked by a senator, the former governor stated: “We (Osun State Government) ensured between July 2015 and July 2018 that public servants on level one to seven and they constitute about 72 per cent in the state earned their full pay, contrary to the belief that every civil servant was paid 50 per cent.”
He added, “Osun’s civil servant population is huge but it is top-heavy. Levels one to seven that constitute 72 per cent take N1bn, while the fat cats who are less than 30 per cent take more than N2bn.
“I never owed anyone on levels one to seven a dime because they wouldn’t be able to get by without their salaries.”
After answering to other questions, the senate asked him to take a bow and go.
Rauf Aregbesola is the immediate past governor of Osun State. He spent eight years in office, from 2010 to 2018
He is 62 years.
Aregbesola was once a Commissioner of Works in Lagos State.
