Iwobi Scores As Fulham Defeat Manchester United 2-1 At Old Trafford

Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, scored the winning goal to help Fulham to a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

It was an amazing evening for Nigerians as another Super Eagles star, Calvin Bassey opened the scoring for Fulham in the 65th minute with a volley following a rebound.

Harry Maguire brought Manchester United back into the game in the 89th minute.

Iwobi finished off an impressive counter-attacking move from a Cairney’s pass before cutting inside between two Manchester United defenders to slot pass the hapless Andre Onana.

He became the first Fulham player to score a winning goal at Old Trafford since Steed Malbranque in October 2003.

Iwobi’s goal helped Fulham to their first win at Old Trafford since December 2009 and also ended their poor run of 11 consecutive defeats away from home.

Fulham coach, Marco Silva hailed his team’s performance at Old Trafford.

He said, “I’m pleased how we played at the start of the second half,” said the Portuguese.

“After we scored, we knew there would be a reaction. We tried to play offside for their goal, but there was not the synchronisation we wanted, and as they pushed, we showed the mentality that we had missed in other away games. It was a great counter and a great finish.

“The players deserve great credit because they understood the plan and executed the plan. It was an open game. We don’t change away or at home. This is our way.”

Iwobi has now scored four Premier League goals this season, while Bassey bagged his first-ever Fulham goal.
