Many Feared Killed As DSS, IPOB Clash In Enugu

There are fears that scores of people were killed at Oye Emene, Enugu State, Sunday morning, when some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the operatives of the Department of Security Services, DSS, clashed.

THE WHISTLER learnt that the DSS operatives intercepted the IPOB members when they were holding a meeting in a building in the area.

The IPOB members, in their numbers, resisted arrest, and even overpowered the security operatives, it was gathered.

However, the clash turned bloody when more police operatives alongside other security agents were mobilised to the scene, leading to sporadic shooting.

Many members of the proscribed group were reportedly arrested in the process, with some said to be dead.

Our correspondent learnt that the encounter took place around St Patrick’s Secondary School and St Joseph’s Catholic Church, along the old Abakaliki road in Emene.

An eye witness said, “The DSS people came, and started shooting. But their bullets didn’t enter the body of IPOB members. But when more policemen came, IPOB members began to run. I think one of the security men died also.”

Another source said one person was burnt by IPOB members during the rampage.

As at the time of filing this report, many security operatives were seen around the area maintaining peace.

The spokesman of the Enugu State Police Command, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, told our correspondent that newsmen would be briefed on what transpired shortly.
