Mixed Reactions As Ekiti Begins ‘Naming And Shaming’ Of Sexual Offenders

Mixed reactions have trailed the decision of the Ekiti State Government to begin to name and shame convicted sexual offenders in the state.

Governor Kayode Fayemi had taken to his verified twitter account (@kfayemi) on Friday to announce that starting from today August 16, 2019, his administration would begin to publicly shame persons who have been convicted for sexual related offences in the state.

“Today, we commence the naming and shaming of convicted sexual offenders in Ekiti State. #SayNotoRape,” Fayemi tweeted.

The governor’s tweet was accompanied with the photo of one Reverend Asateru Gabriel of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Ifisin-Ekiti area of the state who was recently sentenced to five years for sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl.

The Ekiti State Ministry of Justice had issued a notice indicating that Gabriel’s case had been registered in the state ministry’s sex offenders’ register.

But reacting, some Twitter users have slammed Governor Fayemi over his administration’s decision to embarrass sexual offenders in the state.

Others however commended the move, saying it would serve as deterrent to would-be sexual offenders in the state.
