Nations Cup: Peseiro, Yobo Not Convinced By Super Eagles Performance

Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo has revealed that he is not convinced by the team’s performance in the 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on Monday.

The Super Eagles earned a 1-0 win over the Wild Dogs to seal a place in the next round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

It was not the best of performance from the team but they will be happy to go through to the stage after a shaky start against Equatorial Guinea.

Yobo, who made over 100 appearances for the Super Eagles between 2002 and 2014 is not impressed with the team’s performance in Ivory Coast so far.

Yobo said, “It was not a convincing victory even though we got the deserved result we needed. The team still need more cohesion because from the midfield, we are yet to get it right.

“However, we have more attacking players than midfield players. But then, when Iwobi picks, I am sure the team will create more goal scoring chances.

“I think keeping a clean sheet is another positive result from today’s game and it shows the defence is doing something good.”

The Super Eagles have only scored one goal from open play in the competition despite parading attackers in the team. The likes of Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon and Ademola Lookman have struggled to find their goalscoring form in Ivory Coast.

Osimhen scored a header in the first match against Equatorial Guinea, while William Troost-Ekong’s penalty handed the team the maximum points against Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles needed an own goal from Guinea-Bissau’s Sangante to pick the maximum points on Monday.

Similarly, The Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro has urged the team to improve on their goalscoring form.

“It’s a new competition that’s starting for us. The most important part of a competition, the knockout matches,”

” We will have to be more clinical in front of goal because the slightest mistake will be fatal for us”
