Somali Parliament Impeaches Prime Minister, Ali Khaire Over ‘Insecurity’

The Somali Parliament, on Saturday, passed a 170 – 8 vote of no confidence on the administration of Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Directorate of Communications, the Presidency.

“As part of the fulfilment of his constitutional mandate, H.E. President Mohammed Abdulahi Farmaajo has accepted the decision of the House of the People taking into consideration the independence and Constitutional authority of the House of the People,” the statement partly read.

President Farmaajo noted that the development was not good for a country that is bedeviled by numerous crisis.

He also wished his counterpart succes in his future endeavors.

“a simmering power struggle between him and the president came to the fore.”

The president’s allies have also accused Khaire of failing to stabilise the security situation, according to Reuters.

There have also been disagreements over date of the next elections.

“The rift between the government and the legislature is undermining the progress that has been made, and to that end I have decided to consider the decision of the House of Representatives as the foundation of our nationhood, ” the president claimed.

According to the statement, another prime minister would quickly be appointed to ” lead the country through this transition period and strengthen service delivery to the public.”

Khaire was appointed Prime Minister and approved by parliament on March 1, 2017.
