The NLC President Joe Ajaero stated this in Abuja while addressing Newsmen after a closed-door National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

The protest, according to Ajaero, was to press their demands on the current hardship being faced by Nigerians following various economic reforms by the Tinubu-led administration.

Recall that THE WHISTLER earlier reported that NLC gave the federal government a 14-day ultimatum to meet its October 2, 2023 agreement. The ultimatum ends on February 22.

Addressing newsmen, Ajaero said, “The NEC session took notice of the wise decision of the National Executive Council of the Congress to demand that the agreement be implemented.

“NEC unanimously noted its deep disappointment and condemned the actions of the federal government in refusing to implement the agreements and reached the following decisions.

“It stands and ratifies the 14-day ultimatum issued to the federal government to implement the agreement and address the mounting crisis of survival by Nigerians.

“The notice expires at midnight on Thursday, February 22, 2024, if on the expiration congress is not satisfied with the government’s compliance with the conditions of the notice, the Congress will be at liberty to take action that will compel the government to implement the agreement”.

Speaking on the immediate action to be taken if their demands are not met, Ajaero said, “The NEC in session declares a two-day national protest on 27th and 28th of February”

Speaking further he noted that if their demands are not met after the nationwide protest, NEC will issue a notice that will expire on March 2, 2024, to the federal government after which an “indefinite nationwide strike will be ensured”.

The move, he said, is to demonstrate the mountain hardship and insecurity around the nation as Nigerian workers and people are not interested in the empty talk now about action.

The NLC called on its affiliates, state councils, and civil society allies to begin mobilization across the nation for effective action as February 22 approaches.
