‘Have Grass Cutters Become So Expensive?’ – Nigerians Attack Festus Keyamo For Launching 774,000 Jobs With Cutlass

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, has come under fire for subjecting beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s 774,000 special public works scheme to manual labour instead of opting for machine.

Keyamo was seen in viral social media photos performing a ceremonial grass cutting exercise with a cutlass during the scheme’s flag off in his Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State, at the weekend.

The minister had also distributed cutlasses and wheelbarrows to the beneficiaries engaged undertake the public works in the state.

But some Twitter users criticized him for turning citizens to “wheelbarrow pushers”, while others said it was another form of ‘modern slavery’ to ask beneficiaries of the programme to cut grass with cutlasses for N20,000 per month.

Below are some of the reactions on Twitter.
