Lagos Youths Protest, Seek Severe Punishment For Rapists

Youths under the aegis of Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association on Friday staged a protest against incessant rape in the country.

The youths started their protest at the Lagos Television premises and marched to the Lagos State House of Assembly where they dropped their protest letter.

The Lagos State Chairman of the YYSA, Olaniyi Ilori, led the youths who were armed with placards with various inscriptions against sexual violence against females.

The protest coincided with the
International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is observed on June 19 by the United Nations.

The purpose of the day is to raise awareness on the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence.

Ilori condemned incessant tape cases in the country while calling on security agencies, the judiciary and every Nigerian to rise against the crime.

He said, ” We are alarmed by the rate at which rape is happening all over the country and we have come out to say this must come to an end.

“There should be strict punishments for rapists. It is a crime against humanity and everybody must rise against it.

” Rape victims should speak out. Not speaking out is encouraging the perpetrators to continue in their criminal acts.

” There is no excuse good enough to raoe anybody. It is evil and it must be met with strict punishment to serve as deterrent for those who may still want to do it.

” We have kept quiet for too long and it is the high time we stopped this evil.”
