Nations Cup: Morocco Stumble Against Lowly Congo DR

Nations Cup favourites, Morocco played out a disappointing 1-1 draw with Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.

The Atlas Lions failed to build on their impressive 3-0 win over Tanzania in the first game and they have been made to wait to book a place in the next round of the competition.

Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring for Morocco with a low volley after he was left unmarked in the sixth minute.

Cedric Bakambu missed the chance to draw Congo level after his penalty hit the post and went wide.

Morocco failed to make their dominance count in the second half as Congo broke their hearts to snatch a valuable point.

Mvumpa equalised for Congo with a clinical strike in the 76th minute to ensure the share of the spoils.

Morocco’s Yassim Bounou produced two stunning saves to deny Congo the maximum points.

The Atlas Lions are on top of Group F on four points followed by Congo, who have two points from two games.

Morocco will be back in action against Zambia, while Congo and Tanzania will slug it out on Wednesday in the last match of the group.
