NLC Hails Court Judgement Affirming Baruwa’s Leadership At NURTW

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday applauded the National Industrial Court for affirming the executive of Comrade Tajudeen Baruwa as the lawful leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

In August 2023, the NLC accused the Nigeria Police Force of bringing thugs to occupy the national secretariat of the NURTW while also alleging that the Ministry of Labour was in support of the incident following its silence on the matter.

The crisis at NURTW was between two factional groups led by Tajudeen Baruwa and Basiru Agbede.

Seven months after the incident, the NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero in Abuja on Monday commended Honourable Justice O. O Oyewumi for reinstating Baruwa to his democratically elected position.

“The judgment is a tribute to the personal qualities of the Presiding Judge, Honourable Justice O. O Oyewumi as well as the growing image of the National Industrial Court as a Court to reckon with, as a Court of justice and as a Court that would not readily cave in to the overbearing influence of the executive.

“At a wider level, it is suggestive of hope, freedom, justice and independence of thought in the judiciary for the judicial officers with the requisite skill, knowledge and courage to take the right decisions,” Ajaero said.

Speaking further, Ajaero said the union’s motive was not to embark on a court case.
