Rivers At 50: Wike To Honour Amaechi

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has included Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, on the list of several persons to be honoured by the state.

The personalities will be honoured for their individual contributions to the development of Rivers State, as part of its Golden Jubilee Anniversary.

The awards ceremony is slated to hold on Saturday, May 27 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Former Nigerian leaders Goodluck Jonathan and Yakubu Gowon are among the 29 people to be honoured by the state, alongside late activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, who would be honored posthumously, the Premium Times reports.

Recall that Mr. Amaechi served as governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, and Governor Wike who succeeded the transport minister, served as his chief of staff from 2007 to 2011.

The bad blood between the Rivers top politicians began after Mr. Wike was appointed as Minister of State for Education by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr. Wike was working towards succeeding Amaechi as governor in 2015, but the minister wanted Mr. Dakuku Peterside as his successor.

The disagreement escalated into an all-out political chaos between the duo.

On Monday, the governor accused Mr. Amaechi of raising a cult militia in the state, to prepare for 2019 elections. Mr. Amaechi denied the allegation.
