20-Year-Old Among 3 ‘Internet Fraudsters’ Arrested In Owerri

The Imo state police command has arrested three suspected internet fraudsters allegedly behind some cybercrimes in Owerri, Imo, and neighbouring states.

The suspects, Chidiebere Nwanguma, 23; Chukwuemeka Johnson, 20; and Maduka Vincent, 22; are natives of Idemeogwa in Mbaitoli Local Government Area.

The residents of Orogwe in Owerri West Local Government Area were arrested in a Lexus RX 350 car along Amakohia Owerri/Orlu road on May 20.

According to the police spokesperson in Imo, Bala Elkana, the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Imo State police command’s tactical unit.

“On 20/5/2021 at about 2240hours, acting on credible intelligence, Operatives from the Tactical Units, Imo State Police Command busted a syndicate of notorious Internet fraudsters, who have been on the run for series of Cybercrimes they have committed within Imo and neighbouring states,” he said.

Bala said the suspects confessed to the crime as three iPhones, laptops and substance suspected to be cannabis sativa were recovered from them.

“The suspects confessed to have defrauded many unsuspecting members of the public.

“The Commissioner of Police Imo State, CP Abutu Yaro, has directed that the suspects be charged to Court,” said the police spokesperson.
