Tinubu Sacks Director-General 2 Months After Appointment, Names Replacement

President Bola Tinubu has sacked Ramatu Abonbo Mohammed as the Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, less than three months after appointing her to the position.

In a State House release on Thursday, Tinubu approved the appointment of Mr. Olugbile Holloway as the new Director-General of the commission.

Mohammed was one of 11 chief executive officers appointed on January 12, 2024 to lead various agencies under the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy.

However, her tenure was short-lived as the president replaced her with Holloway, who until his appointment was the Managing Director of Evoke Communications Limited — a creative branding and consultancy firm.

According to the statement, Holloway holds a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and International Relations as well as a Master’s in Business Administration.

Tinubu’s spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, said the president expects the new DG to “bring life into this important agency and ensure the preservation, promotion, and development of Nigeria’s diverse tangible and intangible cultural heritage.”

No reason was given for Mohammed’s removal, which came amid the Tinubu administration’s plans to reposition the arts, culture and creative economy sector.

Ngelale had previously cited Tinubu as mandating all new appointees to the ministry to “discharge their duties in accordance with the highest standards of professionalism, diligence, and patriotism with a view to making the creative sector more vibrant and robust.”

In January, THE WHISTLER exclusively reported how allegations of impropriety rocked the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy following Tinubu’s appointment of agency heads on the recommendation of the minister, Hannatu Musawa.

THE WHISTLER had gathered from high-ranking ministry officials, including some directors, that two of the eleven appointments made by President Tinubu violated the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) Act, 2004. The Act established the NCMM as the sole entity responsible for managing all 53 National Museums and Monuments in Nigeria, including the National War Museum and the National Institute of Archaeology and Museums Studies.
