Ogun Police Arrest 59 For Murder, Rape, Cultism, Others

The Ogun State Police Command has paraded 59 suspects arrested for alleged murder, rape, armed robbery as well as cultism.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Edward Ajogun, while parading the suspects at the Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Wednesday, said the police would not relent in their efforts to rid the state of criminals.

He said 25 suspected members of the dreaded Buccaneer cult group and three herbalists were arrested by his men during an initiation ceremony in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The commissioner said the cultists were arrested following intelligence reports that some cultists were planning to unleash mayhem on members of the public after conducting an initiation rite for new members in Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta.

He said the police recovered axes, cutlasses,  Indian hemp, and insignias during a raid on the suspects’ hideout 

 A taxi driver, Tunde Bello, who allegedly abducted and raped a 29-year-old lady (name withheld) was also among the suspects paraded.

The victim was said to have boarded Bello’s taxi at Mowe and was going to work in Lagos but the suspect allegedly veered off the road and took her to a place where he allegedly overpowered her and raped her.

Bello was said to have called the relatives of the lady and demanded a ransom of N140,000 which they paid to an account he sent to them before he freed his victim.

The CP also paraded three murder suspects who were arrested in connection with the beating to death of a 23-year-old man, Samuel Ajibade.

 Ajibade was alleged to have stolen two mobile phones belonging to one of them.

Also paraded, alongside other suspects, was a suspected fraudster, Daudu James.

The commissioner disclosed that James specialised in swapping ATM cards of unsuspecting victims and siphoning money from their accounts and that at the time of his arrest, he had 17 different ATM cards on him.

Ajogun said, “The suspect had succeeded in swapping ATM cards of two persons and siphoned the sum of N40,000 and N55,000 from the victims.

“He, however, ran out of luck when one of his victims sighted him in another bank trying to swap another person’s ATM card.

“The victim raised alarm and he was promptly arrested.”
